the site

Monterrey, Mexico

Monterrey is the third largest metropolitan area in Mexico with a population of nearly four million people (equivalent to the size of Los Angeles, CA). A population of this size offers numerous opportunities to serve, both within the city limits and in the outlying regions.

Every year, nearly 70,000 people from other parts of Mexico immigrate to Monterrey in search of jobs in one of its many factories and businesses. Those immigrants often settle in "poverty belts" on the outskirts of the city in communities like Colonia la Aliauza, where a few thousand families have built makeshift shelters out of boards and scrap metal. These communities of improvised dwellings are inundated with disease, hunger, and hopelessness.

During your time on site, Mission Encounter will provide six nights of lodging in local hotels. Also, breakfast and lunch will be provided during the four workdays. Work and Witness insurance for each participant is also included.

Below are pictures of the hotel we will be using this summer:

the projects

The following is only a sample list of available projects. Mission Encounter specializes in adapting work projects to fit the strengths and talents of each individual team.

GOL is a creative outreach strategy targeted to children, youth, and adults. Soccer camps will be held globally with the intent of reaching the lost for Jesus. The camps coincide with the World Cup soccer event being hosted in South Africa in June and July 2010. The attention of the world is focused on the World Cup as “futbol” is the most popular sport worldwide. GOL is a widely understood sports term meaning to score. Soccer camps will feature the GOL evangelism soccer ball and the JESUS Film. This event provides the church a great opportunity to tell the story of Christ to children, youth, and adults in a creative outreach setting.

The camp centerpiece is a soccer ball with multi colors that correlate to important aspects in the Gospel story:

BLACK - sin / spiritual darkness

RED - Christ's blood - the cleansing power of Christ's blood

GOLD – God

GREEN – growth as new believers

Participants will take home a mini version of the ball in the form of a hacky sack.

In addition to soccer camps, our volunteers will be working to restore a local campground.

The day will be filled with soccer and work projects. The evening will conclude with a showing of the JESUS Film. The final outcome of the day will be praying the prayer of salvation with those who don’t knowJesus. The GOL is that many will leave the soccer camp as new believers in Christ and will be trained to use the hacky sack to go out and share Jesus with others. There will be follow-up by local churches.

Below are pictures of the campground that we will be refurbishing and one of the sports fields we'll be utilizing:
